Well, this brings us to the last and final article on Autism in America. This series has been a real heartbreaker and a joy for me. It has not been meant to be a definitive work but rather an act of love for God's children. I am speaking of you. Please forgive me if I have not addressed all the issues as this is just something I put together on my flight home from Miami World Conference. Maybe I will write a book as my pastor has urged me so many times before. Well enough of that, LET'S DO IT. 
 It is my understanding that children on the spectrum have many and varied issues ranging from Oxidative Stress, mineral imbalances to abnormal gastrointestinal microbial flora as well as the same nutritional deficiencies as I have written about in previous articles. 
1. Our standard go to "numero uno" OPC--as multiple studies have shown elevated markers of oxidative stress in the brain. 
2. Vitamin C--excellent systemic antioxidant with antiviral properties. 
3. Omega 3--important due to previously noted DHA deficiency in autism and it's importance in brain health. 
4. Nutriclean Probiotics/Prebiotics--due to noted gastrointestinal symbiosis and frequent Candida and Clostridial overgrowth. 
5. B Vitamins--important in energy production, nerve and brain health. (deficiency during pregnany may increase risk, verdict is still out)

So when people ask me, "Have your products been cleared by the FDA", I just want to scream. God, I hope not. Is this the same FDA that has allowed Roundup to be used on our food for the last 40 years ? Is this the same FDA that allows A1 milk instead of A2 milk to be consumed in vast quantities by our citizens contributing to Leaky Gut Syndrome? Is this the same FDA that has a revolving door for the large pharmaceutical companies' executives? The same companies which will never do their highly touted "double blind placebo controlled studies" on nutraceuticals which will open the door to the western trained physicians to step out of their comfort zones. This healthcare system of disease management rather than treatment, powerful pharmaceutical companies and refusal to honestly fight for the patient illicits a powerful response in me. It makes me want to puke. It pushes my determination to speak my mind. I am just as guilty of this as any other medical professional. I have dedicated my whole and complete life to serving my patients and I feel as if I have failed you. Despite three board certifications, I didn't know. How lame is that? I pledge to work harder than ever before. What are the treatment choices currently being used? Well, there is applied behavior analysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, sensory integration/occupational therapy, social skills therapy, speech/language therapy and intensive behavioral intervention. All of these and more therapeutical options are available and are put into practice by some of the most dedicated health professionals I have ever met. They have real and tangible benefit for our children. Drug therapy, you might ask, well we have antidepressants, stimulants, and antipsychotics. As if we didn't have enough issues already. NO THANK YOU. I believe that we have better options for our friends and family and I will discuss these options next week in the final article on Autism in America. Certainly, we need to understand this problem. But where do we start? There have been multiple potential causes cited. In particular these causes include genetic, environmental, viral infections during pregnancy, mercury and PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls), drugs and alcohol abuse and vaccinations especially MMR. So many possible causes, tells me that we really don't know the real cause. My concern is that of pesticide exposure.

There is a modality called a Pierson Coefficient. This relates the likelihood of two events occurring and their relationship to each other. The closer the coefficient approaches one, the closer to certainty. We all know that smoking causes lung cancer. The Pierson Coefficient for cigarette smoking and lung cancer is 0.78. The coefficient for glyphosates and Autism is 0.98, almost approximating 1.0 (certainty). Glyphosates is Roundup, we should be angry. The use of roundup is skyrocketing with approx. 8 out of 10 Americans tested being positive. We find it in corn, soybeans, wheat and even in the water used for crops. We are seeing it in organic and especially in nonorganic foodstuffs.

PCOS is a relatively common malady of females, approximately 6.8 % of the population. The cause of PCOS is unkown, but it is felt that insulin resistance may be at the core of the illness. It commonly affects women of reproductive age and it's effects can range from very mild symptoms to severe unrelenting, disfiguring difficulties for women. The diagnosis is made when two of the three main findings are noted. The underlying issue results in a deregulation of female hormones resulting in : 1. Menstrual irregularity in frequency and extent. Increases in Leutinizing Hormone and decreases in Follicle Stimulation Hormone are seen. 2. Increases in Androgens. These are male sex hormones and can result in facial or body hair, acne and a male balding pattern. 3. Enlarged ovaries with follicles surrounding the egg cells.

The cause of this is unknown but has been related to : 1. Excess insulin, which may result in increased androgens and thus infertility. 2. Increased Inflammation. Research indicates that low grade inflammation may cause ovaries to produce androgens. This can also predispose the patient to vascular disease (heart and brain injury) 3. Heredity. There is a component of this as well among families with PCOS. The complications of this illness include infertility, miscarriages, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, high cholesterol, osa, depression anxiety coronary artery disease, blood clots to the lungs and uterine cancer. The different types of treatment include hormone manipulation (BCP), progesterone therapy, antiestrogens and metformin. What types of natural supplements might help? Funny you should ask : 1. What I would like to talk about today is the Human Microbiome. I have been reading and studying this topic for the last six months and am convinced that this is a foundational concept in wellness that cannot be denied. I am appreciative of Dr. Dee Clinical Director of nutraMetrix to have brought this to my attention. I so appreciate her skills in the field of education. I have come to believe that this topic entails the initiating cause of many of our chronic illnesses. It is my sincere belief that in the future we will address chronic disease by way of manipulation of our gastrointestinal bacteria. I am getting ahead of myself so let's back up. In 2005 the National Institute of Health began a six year, 115 million dollar study of the bacterial contents of the human gastrointestinal tract. What they found was that the contents of our bowels weigh as much as our brain. It is made up of approximately 1500 different species of bacteria, of which we only have identified 500 of them. These bacteria are initially seeded by the vaginal tract at birth. interestingly all women's vaginal flora change in character to a type of beneficial bacteria called lactobacillus as the birthing time nears. This is the initial inoculum of bacteria which the infant acquires to seed the GI tract. As the infant matures so does his/her gastrointestinal microbiome (bacteria) over the next two years. If the newborn is being breast fed then the GI tract is constantly being seeded by the mother's own GI tract via her own breast milk. What a fantastic system, if only the mother had a healthy GI tract. What researchers have found is that a normal microbiome is in symbiosis with us. Symbiosis is a state in which two organisms are able to flourish better together rather than independently. We are in a symbiotic state with our GI tract bacteria. They, among other things provide us with 20-30 % of all our daily energy needs thru their metabolism of nondigestible fiber (vegetables, fruits and nuts), synthesize vitamins, essential amino acids, nourish our intestinal tract & maintaining it's integrity, ward off invasive disease causing bacteria and may in fact allow us to live longer & healthier. The "good" bacteria keep a steady flow of energy without the peaks and valleys that characterize our spiking and plummeting glucose and insulin levels so commonly seen in us with our high rates of obesity, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver and diabetic conditions which are so prevalent in our western diet of sugar and fats. These above conditions which we find ourselves and our families in is another name for strokes, heart attacks, blindness, getting your legs cut off and leaving your children and grandchildren to fend for themselves. God knows they need us. It has also been found that a "normal" (that is not what you have) GI tract flora helps in training your immune system to recognize friend from foe. I t helps your immune system to recognize "good" bacteria from "bad" bacteria and this is felt to be the problem in may chronic diseases, a faulty immune function. This is especially important in that 70% of your immune cells line your gastrointestinal tract.
